There is a well established research community in the Cork Harbour Area. In fact, Cork Harbour is a global hub for Ocean Energy research, with one of the largest groupings of researchers in the world working on this topic under the umbrella of The Maritime Energy Research Campus & Commercial Cluster (MERC). The Coastal & Marine Research Centre (CMRC) of University College Cork (UCC) is situated on Haulbowline Island. The National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) in Ringaskiddy is a joint venture between the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and the Irish Naval Service. The new MERC facility will lead to greater co-operation between these instiutions and will also include UCC's Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) and Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG). There is also extensive research ongoing in the Harbour region by other groups and institutions.
