May 30th sees the return of one of the most enjoyable events to take place in Cork over the summer. The Ocean to City is an exciting rowing race of 15 nautical miles, beginning in Crosshaven, then out to Roches Point at the mouth of Cork Harbour, then down the long straight to Cobh, passing in front of the quays. It continues on past Monkstown and on to Passage West before entering Lough Mahon. Rounding the corner at Blackrock Castle crews are on the home stretch. This is the most exciting part as the real race for positioning occurs here as the crews spurred on by the crowds and the approaching finishing line battle it out. Around the finish line at Lapps Quay, Cork City, there will be fun for all the family with clowns, face painting and market stalls. A free maritime heritage exhibition will be on show in the Clarion Hotel. Suggested vantage points to view all the action as it unfolds include:
Crosshaven – 16:15
Cobh – 16:45
Monkstown – 17:15
Lapps Quay - Cork City Centre – 18:00
Please note that the times above are approximate, race start weather dependant. The prize giving event will take place in the Clarion Hotel at 21:00.
Further news and updates on the event will be posted over the coming weeks on http://www.corkharbour.ie and http://www.oceantocity.com.
