Fort Meagher, more commonly known as Fort Camden above the harbour village of Crosshaven, is finally to be made safe and plans are being drawn up to open it’s doors to the public. Following years of hard work by the people of Crosshaven, work is now in progress as part of Crosshaven Tourism's Rescue Camden Project. The work has been supported by Cork County Council and FAS; as well as the contributions by a large team of volunteers, there are currently six FAS maintenance workers on site clearing the now overgrown 45 acres, and a full time project manager is in place. It is intended to have initial rooms ready for the public to view by Saturday the 4th of September (Cork Harbour Open Day) and indeed every Saturday and Sunday 11am - 5pm in September.
Cork County Council has already invited outline proposals from artists for a series of commissions relating to the fort which is widely regarded as an outstanding example of 19th century coastal fortification. According to the Council ‘The Fort Camden Artistic Programme forms part of a developing strategy to raise public awareness about this fortification. The programme aims to realize up to five artist led projects that will be directly inspired by the architecture, environment and/or history of the site.’
Fort Meagher has the potential to add another tourist/ recreational gem to the burgeoning crown of Cork tourist attractions, more than holding it’s own alongside other ex-military installations Spike Island and Elizabeth Fort.
